Reschke R-Series Merlot is made in the Limestone Coast region of South Australia. The vineyards enjoy well-draining red loam soils over limestone, which help retain freshness and minerality even in warm conditions. The winemaking involves careful fruit selection, typically fermenting in static fermenters over about eight days, followed by maturation (around ten months) partly in French oak. These methods allow the wine to deliver ripe, dark berry flavours while still retaining structure and finesse. Alcohol is fairly high, around 14.5% ABV.
Tasting Notes:
- Appearance: Deep red-purple with strong colour saturation; dense core and vibrant edges
- Aroma: Red and dark berries (plum, cassis, redcurrant), touches of black olive, dark chocolate, and vanillin oak; subtle herbal notes (rosemary-like)
- Palate: Rich mid-palate, with ripe plum and blackcurrant fruits up front; creamy oak adds vanilla and spicy chocolate; balanced acidity, plush texture; tannins are present but smooth
- Finish: Dry finish; lingering dark fruit, oak spice, and a touch of savoury herbal note; good length
- ABV: ~ 14.5%
Serving Suggestions:
Serve at about 16-18 °C. Decanting may help especially for recent vintages to allow the wine to open up. Pairs beautifully with roasted meats (beef, lamb), rich tomato-based dishes, mushrooms, or even grilled vegetables. Also works nicely with medium-hard cheeses.
