Graham’s Tawny Port (often labelled “The Tawny” or family-“Aged Tawny” from W. & J. Graham’s, produced in the Douro Valley, Portugal) is a cask-matured fortified wine, typically aged 7-9 years in seasoned oak. It represents a “wood-aged” tawny style, blending various vintages (“lotes”) that have spent extended time in oak casks. Bottled at ~20% ABV, it delivers complexity derived from both fruit and oak development.
Tasting Notes:
-
Appearance: Deep golden-amber, warm tawny hue; rich, with light copper or amber tones.
-
Aroma: Aromas of orange peel, cinnamon, dried fruits (prune, raisin, figs), toasted nuts; subtle oak spice and warm wood tones.
-
Palate: Full and generous; smooth richness of fruit (dried stone fruit, figs), nutty (almond, hazelnut), soft caramel or toffee balancing with mild oak maturity.
-
Finish: Long and clean; lingering dried fruit and nut notes, slight spice warmth, generous but never overly sweet.
-
ABV: 20% (standard for tawny port)
Serving Suggestions:
Serve slightly chilled (≈10-14 °C) in a port glass or small wine glass to concentrate aroma. Enjoy as a dessert wine on its own or paired with nut-based desserts (almond tart, pecan pie), crème brûlée, dried fruits or rich cheeses. Also works well as a sipping drink after dinner or with chocolate desserts.
